The month of May is Asian American & Pacific Islander month. You may be wondering why Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are highlighted and celebrated during the month of May. Minority groups, like many Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, get overlooked culturally, historically, socio-economically, and are type-casted as 'Model Minorities'. They are also stereotyped as “perpetual foreigners,” the idea that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are inherently foreign, other and not truly American. The month of May allows for education to help break stereotypes and to celebrate the unique journey of all AAPI immigrants and citizens in the United States, their life experiences, traditions and cultures.
Behind the Design -
2023 is the Year of the Rabbit—a symbol of hope and peace. To celebrate Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, we created this shirt with this in mind. We hope for a world where all cultures—including the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities—are seen, celebrated, and flourishing as they should. The design is embellished with nature elements inspired by the blue and white porcelain popularly seen in Asian American homes.
